In the EMS world there are basically two kinds of ventilators: automatic transport ventilator and the classic bag one.

Southern Medical Journal published a study aimed to compare Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedics (EMT-P) perceptions of the usefulness of an automatic transport ventilator (ATV) in comparison to bag valve (BV) ventilation for intubated patients.

A total of 28 patients took part into the study, 14 on the BV arm and 14 on the ATV one.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or assisted ventilation patients were randomly assigned by day to each arm and EMT-Ps had to complete questionnaires at the conclusion of each patient enrolment. They were asked to rate the modality of use on ease of use, setup time, expedition of transport, documentation, additional tasks completed, overall patient care and comfort.

Conclusions showed that EMT-Ps accomplished more tasks, documented more completely and provided better patient care with the use of ATV.
