Recent media coverage has suggested that the name of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been misused in relation to companies and foundations in the so-called ‘Panama Papers’. If these allegations prove to be true, then it would be of serious concern to the organization and we would thoroughly condemn it.

The ICRC’s global humanitarian activities depend on trust, transparency and the organization’s reputation for neutrality, impartiality and independence. Any misuse or abuse of the ICRC name could have far-reaching consequences for the vital humanitarian work that its staff carry out every day, in some of the most dangerous and inhospitable places on earth.

The ICRC is currently trying to establish more details about the allegations. Depending on the result of these enquiries, the ICRC will not hesitate to take any action necessary to protect its reputation, its staff and its humanitarian activities around the world.
