A record summer of fires and rescue: fire fighters in action
Oltre 531.000 interventi dall’inizio dell’anno, in particolare dovuti agli incendi. 27% in più rispetto al 2023
The summer of 2024 proved to be particularly demanding for the Italian fire brigade. The data released by the General Command of the National Fire Brigade speaks for itself: since the beginning of the year, more than 531,000 operations have been carried out, with an average of almost 2,500 per day. This figure is far higher than in previous years, showing a significant increase in operational activity.
Fires: the most pressing emergency
Among the different types of intervention, the one related to fires stands out. Over 135,000 fire extinguishers have been recorded, with an increase particularly evident in the case of forest and vegetation fires. The latter, in fact, have exceeded 50,000, registering an increase of 27% compared to the same period of 2023.
Causes of fires
The causes of forest fires are manifold and often linked to human action. Among the main ones are:
- Cigarette Abandonment: Many fires are caused by cigarette butts being thrown carelessly along the roadside or into the woods
- Malicious acts: Arson is not uncommon, often motivated by resentment or speculative intent
- Human error: Human activities, such as agricultural work or barbecue operations, can also accidentally trigger a fire
The role of climate change
In addition to human causes, however, the serious situation due to climate change should be noted. The increasing temperatures and prolonged drought periods create ideal conditions for the spread of fires.
August under pressure
Even on the occasion of August, the fire brigade was engaged on several fronts. More than 5,600 firefighters have been deployed throughout the country, supported by air vehicles such as Canadair and helicopters. The objective was to ensure maximum efficiency in extinguishing and rescue operations, in a period of the year traditionally characterized by an increase in fire fighting activity.
An ongoing commitment
The data presented provides a clear and alarming picture of the situation. Fire services are facing an increasing number of emergencies, often complex and dangerous. Their daily commitment is essential to ensure the safety of citizens and the protection of the territory.
Commitment to a safer future
The summer of 2024 has put a strain on the Italian fire brigade, which has to face a record number of interventions. To cope with this situation it is necessary to be prepared, invest in prevention and training of personnel, and upgrade equipment. It is also crucial to promote greater awareness of the risks of fire and encourage responsible behaviour by citizens.
