Fire ravages campsite in southern France: thousands evacuated
The flames, fueled by strong winds, forced some 3,000 people to evacuate the facility
A violent fire has upset the tranquility of a campsite in Canet-en-Roussillon, in the Eastern Pyrenees, in southern France. The flames, fueled by strong winds that blew at over 80 km/ h, forced about 3,000 people to evacuate urgently the structure, spending a night of uncertainty and fear.
A heavy budget
The fire caused extensive material damage: one bungalow was completely destroyed and five others were partially damaged, along with a caravan. The flames spread over two hectares, seriously threatening the entire Mar Estang campsite, a highly popular tourist facility that could accommodate up to 3,000 people.
The relief effort and gradual return
Thanks to the prompt intervention of the fire brigade, supported by several aerial vehicles, the fire was subdued avoiding even more serious consequences. Some 2,500 campers have been able to return to their accommodation, but many have found their accommodation damaged or unusable. For those who no longer had a place to stay, a gym was set up as a temporary reception facility.
The causes of the fire
The exact causes of the fire are still being investigated by the competent authorities. However, the particularly adverse weather conditions, with strong winds and high temperatures, certainly contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. The possibility of a short circuit or an intentional act is not excluded, but at the moment there are no concrete elements to support either of the two hypotheses.
An appeal to caution
Following this event, the local authorities have issued a call for extreme caution, urging the population to comply with safety regulations and to report any suspicious situation immediately. It is also essential that everyone is aware of the risks associated with forest fires and that they adopt responsible behaviour, avoiding lighting fires in the open and throwing out lit cigarettes.
An event that leaves its mark
The fire in Canet-en-Roussillon is a blow to local tourism, but also a warning to authorities and citizens that they must take appropriate measures to address the risks of climate change.
