Forest fire alert: Italy under pressure

23 requests for aerial intervention to tame the flames threatening forests, countryside and dwellings

The heat wave that is sweeping Italy has triggered an unprecedented fire alarm. On the 11th of August alone, the fire brigade received 23 requests for aerial intervention to tame the flames that threaten forests, countryside and, in some cases, even homes.

A record summer

Record temperatures and prolonged droughts are creating ideal conditions for the spread of fires. The Unified Air Operations Centre (COAU) of the Civil Protection Department has been literally flooded with requests for intervention, with Lazio, Calabria and Campania in the front line. Other regions such as Basilicata, Molise, Puglia and Sardinia have also been affected by outbreaks.

The commitment of the fire brigade

Canadair and helicopter pilots are working tirelessly to put out the fires and secure the affected areas. Thanks to their early intervention, it has been possible to contain and extinguish several fires. However, the situation remains critical and shutdown operations will continue as long as conditions permit.

Health inequalities: a persistent problem

Health inequalities are a problem in the US. Low-income communities, ethnic minorities and people living in rural areas have limited access to quality medical care and are more exposed to health risk factors. This gap has been further widened by the Covid pandemic, highlighting the need for a more equitable and inclusive health system.

Causes of fires

Most forest fires are caused by imprudent or malicious behaviour. Lighting fires outdoors, throwing lit cigarettes, abandoning glass bottles that can act as a magnifying glass are just some examples of actions that can trigger a fire. It is essential that we all behave responsibly and comply with the laws in force to prevent such disasters.

The importance of prevention

Preventing fires is essential to protect our territory and communities. In addition to respecting the rules, it is important:

  • Report any outbreaks promptly: Call 112 or fire department 115
  • Create fire belts: Remove dry grass and flammable material around the house
  • Inform yourself about the weather: Avoid lighting fires or using equipment that produces sparks during periods of drought and strong wind
  • Cooperate with authorities: Follow the instructions given by local authorities in case of fire hazard

The consequences of fire

Forest fires have devastating consequences for the environment, the economy and public health. In addition to the loss of biodiversity and natural habitats, fires cause damage to infrastructure, pollute air and can cause serious respiratory problems.

An appeal to accountability

Collective commitment is needed to tackle the problem of forest fires. Institutions must invest in fire prevention and fighting, but citizens must also play their part by acting responsibly and working with the authorities. Only in this way can we protect our precious natural heritage and ensure a better future for future generations.
