Mountain search and rescue, seven nations at the K9 "Rubble 2022" Workshop
From 12 to 16 September 2022, the Workshop K9 “Rubble 2022” was held at the Mountain Rescue Operational School of the Guardia di Finanza, for Alpine Rescue Dog Units under the aegis of the I.C.A.R. (International Commission for Alpine Rescue)

The event was logistically and operationally based at the GdF’s Colbricon-Cimon Barracks in Passo Rolle and was attended by around 60 canine units from seven European countries: Norway, Switzerland, Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Italy.
For Italy, in addition to the S.A.G.F. military. participated the UU.CC. of the National Fire Brigade, the State Police, the C.N.S.A.S. , the U.C.I.S. and other voluntary organisations related to Civil Protection.
The National Fire Brigade also supported the event with the preparation and organisation of the scenarios planned on the rubble field of the Belluno Command.
The K9 Workshop exercise “Rubble 2022” took place in three areas, two for rubble search and one for debris slide search
The experiments on rubble were carried out at the rubble field of the Provincial Headquarters of the Belluno Fire Brigade and on the rubble field of the “La Marca” dogfighting association in Caerano San Marco (TV).

The landslide tests took place in the high mountains at Passo Rolle (TN) and were preceded by a helicopter drill of the UU.CC. by the Air Section of the Guardia di Finanza of Bolzano.
On behalf of the VVF, Ing. Ciro Bolognese, Commander of Vercelli, participated by videoconference, with a speech on the USAR system and operational response, on the operational risks proper to search contexts, on the coordination of search and rescue teams, zoning and the adoptable I.C.S. system, on the USAR VVF Italia structure, on the structure of the UU.CC.VV.F. and on the emergency coordination adopted in Italy pursuant to the Civil Protection Code Legislative Decree no. 1 of 2018.
The SAGF presented the operational experience of the joint intervention in the search and rescue operations on the Marmolada, which also involved the S.A.P.R. (Sistemi Aeromobili Pilotaggio Remoto), UU.CC. and aircraft for the recovery of victims, technical and organic findings.
Lieutenant-Colonel Michele Santoro, Commander of the GdF Dog Training and Breeding Centre in Castiglione del Lago (PG), spoke about the results of a ten-year study on the analysis and assessment of the dog’s operational stress in relation to the operational scenario, as well as the resulting potential signals and behaviour.
The training activities of Workshop K9 ‘Rubble 2022’ included search trials with different levels of difficulty:
– search for a person buried by a landslide;
– search for a person buried by rubble without disturbance;
– search for a person buried by rubble with environmental and other disturbances (smoke, dust, diversions).
The event was attended by the president of the I.C.A.R. Dog Search Commission Marcel Meier, the president of the C.N.S.A.S. Maurizio Dellantonio, the fire brigade commander of Belluno Ing. Del Gallo Antonio, Dr. Stefano Valeri Commander of the Alpine Training Centre of the State Police in Moena (TN), the U.C.I.S. National President Bruno Piccinelli and the Mayor of Caerano San Marco (TV) Gianni Precoma.
