Covid-19: Resumption of infections in Italy
About 17,000 new infections, an increase of 26% from the previous week
Summer 2024 remains a period of relative calm regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, but the latest data show a slight increase in cases. According to weekly monitoring by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) and the Ministry of Health, there have been about 17,000 new infections in the past seven days, an increase of 26 percent from the previous week.
A small increase
Despite this increase, experts reassure: the situation remains under control. The Rt transmissibility index, a key parameter for assessing the progress of the epidemic, stands at 1.19, slightly above 1 but essentially stable from the previous week. This means that, on average, each infected person infects slightly more than another, a value that does not set off alarms.
Hospitals and intensive care: stable situation
Hospital admissions are also relatively quiet. There is a slight increase in both ordinary wards and intensive care units, but the numbers remain low. The highest hospitalization and mortality rates are predictably concentrated in the older age groups.
New variants and reinfections
Analysis of circulating viral variants reveals the co-circulation of several subvariants of Omicron, with a particular focus on the KP.3.1.1 subline, which appears to be on the rise. However, there is currently no evidence that this new variant is more dangerous than its predecessors. The re-infection rate is around 48 percent, which is essentially stable compared to previous weeks. This means that a significant proportion of people who get sick have already contracted the virus in the past, suggesting some population immunity.
What the experts say
Experts stress the importance of continuing to monitor the situation carefully, especially as we look ahead to the coming months. The end of summer and the return to normalcy could lead to an increase in infections, especially in the absence of preventive measures.
How to deal with the rise in infections
To contain the spread of the virus and protect yourself and others, it is essential to continue to follow some simple rules:
- Vaccination: Completing the vaccination cycle and booster when scheduled is critical to reduce the risk of severe disease
- Face mask: In case of symptoms or in crowded and poorly ventilated environments, it is advisable to wear a face mask
- Hand hygiene: Washing hands frequently with soap and water or using a disinfectant gel is a simple but effective act
- Social distancing: Maintaining a safe distance from other people, especially indoors, can help reduce the risk of infection
