Flu and COVID-19 are worrying again as vaccines lose popularity
Health experts raise the alarm: combination of influenza and COVID-19 could have serious consequences
The cold season is approaching and with it the spectrum of influenza and COVID-19 returns. This year, however, the situation could prove particularly complex. Health experts from around the world are warning that the combination of influenza and COVID-19 could trigger a new wave of infections, with potentially serious consequences, especially for the most vulnerable categories of the population.
Increase in cases
Data from the southern hemisphere, where winter has just ended, is alarming. A significant increase in cases of influenza, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and COVID-19 has overburdened health systems and highlighted the danger of these co-infections.
Why bother with it?
Co-infection with influenza and COVID-19 can make the disease more serious, increasing the risk of hospitalization and death. In addition, the simultaneous circulation of different respiratory viruses can make it more difficult to diagnose and manage patients.
The decline in vaccinations
Despite the obvious risks, vaccination rates against influenza and COVID-19 are steadily declining compared to the peaks reached during the acute phase of the pandemic. Several factors have contributed to this situation:
- Vaccination fatigue: The population, after having faced a massive and prolonged vaccination campaign, seems to have developed a kind of “tiredness” towards vaccinations
- Risk perception: With fewer cases and loosening restrictions, many people tend to underestimate the risk of contracting a severe form of disease
- Disinformation: The spread of false news and conspiracy theories has undermined confidence in institutions and vaccines
The consequences
The decline in vaccination coverage could have significant consequences for public health:
- Increase in cases: A greater number of unvaccinated people are more susceptible to infection, which facilitates the circulation of the virus and increases the risk of new variants
- Health systems overburdened: An increase in hospital admissions could put a strain on health systems, already tested by the pandemic
- Preventable deaths: Vaccination remains the most effective tool to prevent serious disease and death
New challenge for our health
The approaching flu season presents a new challenge for our health. The combination of influenza and COVID-19 could have significant consequences, but we can protect ourselves through vaccination. It is crucial that each of us do our part, vaccinating ourselves and encouraging our loved ones to do so.
