Kidney diseases, kidney ballot manoeuvre: what it is, how it is performed and what it is used for
The kidney ballot maneuver is a technique used in medical semeiotics to appreciate the abnormal displacement of an organ, particularly the kidneys
It also allows the ptosed or enlarged kidney to be referred with bimanual palpation between the flank anteriorly and the lumbar region posteriorly.
How the kidney ballot manoeuvre is performed
One hand placed posteriorly in the costo-vertebral angle imparts small rhythmic shocks that are felt by the other hand placed on the abdominal wall.
However, it is not specific to the kidney as the perceived mass can also be of splenic or pancreatic tail or colic origin.
