McBurney's point and positive sign in appendicitis

McBurney’s point is a landmark used in medicine and semiotics in the physical examination of the abdomen

What is McBurney’s point for?

This point is located at the level of the first third of the line which ideally connects the right anterior superior iliac spine and the navel.

If this point is pressed and this evokes pain in the patient, we speak of a positive McBurney point and this can lead to the suspicion of colon pathology, in particular acute appendicitis.
