New hope against lung cancer: the revolution of the Veronesi Foundation
The Umberto Veronesi Foundation has launched a research project dedicated to lung cancer
Lung cancer, a formidable opponent, is finally meeting stronger resistance thanks to the relentless work of the scientific community. The Umberto Veronesi Foundation, at the forefront of the fight against cancer, has launched an ambitious five-year research project specifically dedicated to lung cancer, in collaboration with the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and the University of Chicago.
A multidisciplinary approach to defeat the enemy
The new research platform focuses on two main fronts, both of which are crucial to improving patients’ prospects:
- Early diagnosis: Early detection of lung cancer is crucial to increasing the chances of treatment. Using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and medical image analysis, researchers aim to develop increasingly precise tools for identifying early stage cancer lesions, when they are smaller and easier to handle. The aim is to transform early diagnosis from an exception to a rule, thus enabling early intervention and significantly improving prognosis.
- Personalized therapies: Each tumor is unique, with specific genetic and molecular characteristics. Precision medicine aims to exploit these individual differences to develop therapies tailored to each patient. Thanks to the study of cancer biomarkers, researchers at the Fondazione Veronesi are working to identify patients who could benefit most from specific treatments, such as immunotherapy or target therapies. Immunotherapy, in particular, is one of the most promising frontiers in cancer research, as it stimulates the patient’s immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells.
The Neo-Memory project: unraveling the secrets of immunity
One of the most innovative projects on the platform is “Neo-Memory”, which focuses on the study of patients’ “immunological memory”. The aim is to understand how the immune system reacts to the tumour and identify those patients who are most likely to develop a long-lasting, protective immune response. The results of this research could pave the way for new therapeutic strategies that can enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy and improve long-term survival in patients.
Research to boost future optimism
The Veronesi Foundation, with its constant commitment to scientific research, is helping to write a new chapter in the history of the fight against lung cancer. This ambitious project is laying the foundations for a future in which lung cancer will be less feared and more treatable.
