Pelvic floor dysfunction: what it is and how to treat it

The female pelvic floor (to which the urinary, genital and digestive systems with the bladder, uterus, vagina, rectum and anus belong) can be affected by various so-called dysfunctions

Dysfunctions of the pelvic floor can be divided into anatomical and functional:

  • anatomical ones are defined as downward displacements (prolapse), through the urogenital hiatus of the pelvic floor, bladder, uterus and vaginal and/or rectal mucosa;
  • functional ones are related to the alteration of the functions of containment and emptying of urine or faeces by the bladder and rectum.

The symptoms that most frequently result from pelvic floor dysfunction are

  • urinary and/or faecal incontinence
  • urinary and/or faecal urgency and frequency
  • urinary and/or faecal retention
  • sensory disorders such as chronic pelvic pain
  • vaginal pain or discomfort
  • alterations in sexual function.
