The brain: a network of quantum connections?
Our brain cells, the neurons, communicate with each other through electrical signals. These signals travel along thin filaments called axons. Some researchers think that these axons could function as tiny quantum “wires”, interweaving information instantaneously and overcoming the limitations imposed by the speed of light. We speak in this case of “quantum entanglement”, that is considering two particles of light, regardless of the distance separating them, measuring the state of one determines instantly the state of the other. Similarly, neurons could be “entangled” with each other, allowing instantaneous and non-local transmission of information.

This idea is fascinating, but also very controversial. Maintaining the delicate quantum connections within a warm and humid environment like our brains is a huge challenge. In addition, many scientists are sceptical about the possibility that consciousness may emerge from quantum processes.
