Two more bodies found on the Marmolada, three remain missing: victims rise to 9
The death toll rises to 9 in the collapse of a serac on the Marmolada last Sunday
“Hour after hour a sad balance sheet is being consolidated. In recent days I had always cherished the hope that some of those missing after the Marmolada tragedy might be found and cared for.
There are no words but tears.
The whole of Veneto is weeping. We are close to the families of the victims of one of the ugliest pages in the history of our mountains’.
This is how the president of the Veneto Region commented on the discovery of the remains of other hikers involved in the collapse of a serac on the Marmolada on Sunday
“The Region’s machine had immediately intervened with all the means, operators and volunteers to save as many lives as possible after this accident that is hard to accept and understand.
The search continues, however, in order to give everyone a dignified burial,” Zaia concludes. On his social profiles, he says that two bodies have been identified and transported downstream, and “there are still three missing people to be found.
In the meantime, from Liguria, governor Giovanni Toti sends his thoughts on social media to a couple of hikers hit by the ice avalanche: she is in hospital and he has unfortunately been extracted lifeless by rescuers.
To them goes Toti’s thoughts and ‘to all the stories and families broken by an absurd tragedy’.
