What is a complete blood count (CBC)?

The CBC is one of the most common tests, because it allows a great deal of data to be obtained from the different components of the test

The CBC can include

  • Haematocrit: percentage of the total blood of the corpuscular part, mainly composed of red blood cells.
  • Haemoglobin: protein present in red blood cells, responsible for transporting oxygen.

A) Red blood cells

  • Average corpuscular volume of red blood cells.
  • Mean haemoglobin content of red blood cells (MCH).
  • Mean red blood cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC).
  • Red blood cell volume distribution (RDW).

B) White blood cells (or leucocytes)

The leucocyte formula measures the number and percentage of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils.

C) Platelets

Why measure the blood count CBC?

In a single blood sample, the test provides many important parameters starting with the quantity of cells in the blood.

Are there any preparation rules?

The blood sample is usually taken in the morning. The doctor will suggest whether it is necessary to be fasting.

Is the blood test CBC dangerous or painful?

The test is neither dangerous nor painful.

The patient may feel the pinch as the needle enters the arm.

How is the test performed?

The test is carried out by means of a simple blood sample.
