Alanine aminotransferase is an enzyme found predominantly in the liver. Damage to this organ results in the release of alanine aminotransferase into the bloodstream
Why measure alanine aminotransferase?
The test can be useful to assess liver function, to observe the health of the liver in case of hepatitis or a family history of liver disease or alcohol abuse.
It can also be an indicator of the possible toxic effects of certain drug therapies.
Alanine aminotransferase, are there any preparation rules?
The blood sample is usually taken in the morning. The doctor will suggest whether it is necessary to be fasting.

The examination is neither dangerous nor painful. The patient may feel the pinch of the needle entering the arm.
