What is cholangiography?
Cholangiography is a radiological examination of the bile ducts (common bile duct, cystic duct, hepatic duct and gallbladder, i.e. all the channels that are crossed by the bile) which is carried out by administering a radio-opaque contrast liquid and in the subsequent fluoroscopy and radiography of the affected anatomical parts
What is cholangiography used for?
It is used to visualize the biliary tract to verify its structure, functionality and any pathologies (stones, obstacles of various kinds).
Who can take the exam?
Patients for whom it is necessary to investigate the functioning of the biliary tract.
The examination is contraindicated in pregnant women due to the risk of irradiation of the fetus.
Cholangiography, how does it work?
It consists in the introduction into the bile ducts of a radio-opaque contrast medium.
The techniques for carrying out cholangiography are different.
- Percutaneous cholangiography: prior puncture with a Chiba needle, through the liver, of a peripheral biliary tract
- Trans-Kher cholangiography: using a catheter already placed by the surgeon in the biliary route
- Intraoperative cholangiography: injection of radiopaque contrast medium from the cystic duct already cannulated by the surgeon during cholecystectomy surgery
