What is ECO fusion (fusion ultrasound) used for?
ECO fusion, or ultrasound with fusion technique, is an innovative test that uses the information generated, mainly by nuclear magnetic resonance, during an ultrasound scan to fuse and superimpose the two images
In this way, it is possible to have a three-dimensional representation of the organs and in particular of the prostate gland.
What is ECO fusion used for?
ECO fusion makes it possible to pinpoint the exact topographical location of a lesion suspected to be malignant and, by means of a coordinate system, to target the lesion itself with maximum accuracy.
It is therefore a revolutionary technique as, in the field of prostate pathology, it allows targeted biopsies to be taken instead of random biopsies, which are currently used for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
How is ECO fusion performed?
During the execution of a simple ultrasound scan, through the positioning of a small ultrasound probe in the rectum, the images obtained are combined, in real time, with pre-recorded images obtained by means of a multi-parametric nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.
In this way, the doctor can proceed, if planned, with the biopsy, guiding the needle’s path inside the organ in real time.
Who can perform the test?
There are no general contraindications to ultrasound, while there may be contraindications to performing nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.
Generally, it is useful in all patients in whom a prostate tumour is suspected and a targeted biopsy is desired.
Is ECO fusion a painful and/or dangerous test?
The ultrasound test is painless and not dangerous for the patient.
