What is Phosphorus? Why is it measured?

Phosphorus is found mainly in skeletal tissue and in smaller quantities also in muscle tissue and blood

Phosphorus is responsible for the storage and transfer of energy in the body, it contributes to the production of bone tissue and to the metabolism of lipids and glucose.

The levels of phosphorus in the blood depend on various factors: its intake through the diet, correct absorption from the intestine, adequate renal function and bone metabolism.

Why measure the level of phosphorus?

The test measures the levels of phosphorus in the blood.

The examination may be ordered if a disorder in phosphorus metabolism is suspected or in the context of a diagnosis of thyroid diseases such as hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism.

Are there special preparation rules?

The sampling is usually done in the morning. Your doctor will suggest whether you need to fast.

Is it a painful or dangerous exam?

The exam is neither dangerous nor painful.

The patient can feel the sting as the needle enters the arm.
