What is the glucose breath test?
The breath test or breath test is a diagnostic test that is carried out by analyzing samples of exhaled air. The glucose breath test is useful for diagnosing bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine
Intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome is very frequent, it occurs in many organic pathologies but it is also often found in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or in patients who chronically take drugs (anti-acids, proton pump inhibitors) or who have suffered surgery on the abdomen or in old age.
What is the glucose breath test used for?
In the gastroenterological field, the breath test allows to identify alterations of the gastrointestinal system such as: bacterial contamination, intestinal malabsorption and alteration of intestinal transit, which can manifest themselves through gastrointestinal disorders characterized by flatulence, bloating, diarrhoea, distension and abdominal cramps.
Thanks to the glucose breath test it is possible to diagnose a possible bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.
Who can perform the glucose breath test?
The test can be useful in those patients who report gastrointestinal disturbances with flatulence, bloating, diarrhoea, distension and abdominal cramps.
It can be requested in patients with vague and non-specific intestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, alternate bowel movements) up to more severe conditions (intestinal malabsorption).
Is the glucose breath test dangerous or painful?
The execution of the breath test is simple and non-invasive and is therefore safe for the patient and for the operator.
The test consists of a collection of samples of exhaled air, before and after the ingestion of a specific sugar dissolved in water (glucose), in a plastic bag at regular intervals.
The exam lasts two hours.
