What is the stool test (coproculture)?
This is a test that is performed on a stool sample
What is the stool test used for?
The stool test allows the presence of bacteria responsible for gastrointestinal infections to be detected in the stool sample.
Macroscopic (analysing colour, smell, consistency), chemical and microbiological assessments are carried out on the faeces sample, looking for bacteria.
An antibiogram can then be used to assess the sensitivity and resistance of bacteria in faeces to antibiotics.
Are there any preparation rules?
It is necessary to have a clean container and a sterile container for collecting faeces.
Who can perform the stool test?
A stool examen is prescribed by a doctor if he or she suspects gastrointestinal infections, which can manifest themselves in the form of diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and stomach ache.
Women may not undergo this test on menstruation days.
Is the stool test dangerous or painful?
The test is neither painful nor dangerous.
How is the stool test carried out?
The evacuation of stools must take place spontaneously, without the intake of laxatives.
The patient will defecate into a clean container, then with a special spatula or other instrument will collect a stool sample (according to the indications provided by the laboratory) and deposit it in a sterile stool collection container purchased at the pharmacy or provided by the laboratory.
