How the audiometric test works

The tonal audiometric test is performed inside a special soundproof booth and involves wearing a pair of headphones over the ears.

The audiometric technician will send sounds – from low to high tones – to the headphones and ask the patient to give a nod of consent or press a button as often as they perceive the sound: in this way the doctor can determine the subject’s threshold of minimum audibility.

The test may also involve the use of a device that is placed on the bone behind the ear and that transmits vibrations directly through the bone to the inner ear.

Through the subject’s ability to pick up sounds, the specialist is able to assess the functionality of the outer ear and middle ear.

Through the use of vibrations, on the other hand, the functionality of the inner ear is assessed.
