World Refugee Day: the situation in Lampedusa (Italy)
On the occasion of World Refugee Day, we take stock of the commitment of the Italian Red Cross which has been dealing with the management of the Lampedusa Hotspot since 1 June and which has always been committed to carrying out rescue and reception operations towards anyone – refugees and migrants – arriving in our country in search of a new hope

“Being a refugee is not a choice of freedom, but a constraint to which women, men and children must submit to leave their land.
And this is always painful. History teaches us this and the present tells us about it”, declares the President of the CRI Rosario Valastro.
“Abandoning one’s own land, the one that has the roots of oneself and one’s place, leads to looking elsewhere for what one loves.
And this is the sense of love that is due to those who deserve acceptance, that love that resides in the humanity of arms that know how to be strong with hope for those who have nothing else with them but the desire to be free.
The Red Cross plays a fundamental role, a landing place of wanting to be the homeland not of unique identities but of that identity which is made up of multitudes, of security for the life of those born in a place and of those who, on the other hand, have the only the fault of being born in places where there is no freedom, where there are wars, where there is no water, where there is no life.
Our identity is made up of this, of being people who are not afraid of the other. Happy refugee day to those who are forced to remain silent and to those who, on the other hand, speak for it”.
