2023 Ski Season: Alpine Rescue and Accident Prevention

From physical preparation to prevention of major accidents

Intensive Preparation for the Ski Season

With the arrival of the 2023 ski season, the italian National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS) is engaged in intensive preparation. Recently, in Solda (Bolzano province, Italy), a crucial course dedicated to alpine rescue was held in preparation for safety on snowy slopes. This specialized training is essential for rescuers working in ski resorts.

Critical Skills and Techniques

During the course, participants honed their skills in using special vehicles such as tracked Quads and snowmobiles, as well as in transporting patients with the akja, both off-piste and on the slopes. Additionally, crucial medical techniques for handling common mountain accidents were taught. The training confirmed the exceptional professionalism of CNSAS teams, who will be present in numerous locations during the upcoming ski season.

Risks Beyond Avalanches

In addition to the risk of avalanches, accidents related to hypothermia, falls on ice waterfalls, and slips on icy trails and slopes remain a constant threat. The variability of winter weather conditions makes prevention a crucial aspect. Therefore, CNSAS is promoting awareness and training programs to enhance risk awareness and skier preparedness.

Personal Safety and Preparation

The start of the ski season is an exciting time, but it’s important to note that without adequate physical preparation, the risk of injuries is ever-present. Each year, over 30,000 accidents are reported on the slopes, with over 5% requiring hospital assistance. Men are more often involved (55.4%) than women (44.5%), and half of the accidents occur among those under 30 years of age.

The most common injuries involve lower limbs, such as knee sprains and leg fractures. To prevent falls and accidents, it is essential to start gym training early, even after the summer, and go at least twice a week. The use of helmets should be a common practice among all skiers, not just the youngest.

Safety and Responsibility

In conclusion, as we prepare to enjoy the 2023 ski season, it’s essential to remember that safety comes first. CNSAS is ready to respond to any emergency, but prevention and proper physical preparation remain the best ways to fully enjoy the mountains in winter. Caution, responsibility, and respecting your limits are the keys to a safe and exciting ski season.
