Andrea Scapigliati leads the renewal of the Italian Resuscitation Council
New perspectives and plans for the future of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in Italy
A new chapter for the IRC
The Italian Resuscitation Council (IRC), a well-known nonprofit scientific society of cardiopulmonary resuscitation experts, has opened a new chapter in its history by electing Andrea Scapigliati as its president. This election, which took place during the IRC Members’ Meeting at the Vicenza Congress, marks a significant passing of the baton in the resuscitation scene in Italy. Scapigliati, an experienced anesthesiologist and resuscitation physician, has previously served as IRC vice president for the past two years and previously as president during the 2017-2019 biennium.
A renewed board of directors
The IRC’s new board of directors, elected for the 2023-2025 term, includes leading professionals in the field of resuscitation. They include names such as Claudia Ruffini, vice president, and Silvia Scelsi, outgoing president who now assumes the role of ‘past president.’ The board draws on the experience of figures such as Alberto Cucino, coordinator of the scientific committee, and Samantha Di Marco, coordinator of the training committee, among others. This multidisciplinary team is committed to advancing the mission of the IRC by focusing its energies on research, education and outreach in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Scapigliati’s goals and the future of IRC
Andrea Scapigliati, in his new role as president, outlined goals for the future of IRC. Emphasizing the importance of working with ministries to implement Law 116/21, which calls for mandatory training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation in schools, Scapigliati expressed his desire to intensify first aid training initiatives in driving schools as well. In addition, the IRC will engage in national and international research projects and the restructuring of the training network, with a special focus on the establishment of the Chain of Survival Council and the inclusion of lay people in the association.
IRC’s commitment to training and dissemination
The IRC is well established in the Italian and international cardiopulmonary resuscitation scene. With an activity that extends beyond specialized medical training, the IRC organizes about 10,000 BLSD (Basic Life Support/Defibrillation) courses annually, training more than 120,000 people. This outreach and education effort is a major contribution to community safety and well-being, reflecting the importance of emergency preparedness at all levels of society.
