Fleeing Lviv: Italian Red Cross convoy arrives in Rome with 83 Ukrainian refugees
After 96 hours of travel the Red Cross convoy has returned to Italy from Lviv. The 83 refugees will be sorted into different regions
An Italian Red Cross convoy returned to Rome this morning from Lviv after 96 hours of travel.
It transported 83 Ukrainian refugees to Italy, mostly women, elderly people and children (the youngest is four months old), many of whom are in a fragile condition
Shortly after the arrival of the refugees at the Cri logistics centre in Trullo, in the capital, where they received a first hot meal, Ignazio Schintu, director of operations and emergencies and relief of the Cri, took stock of the situation.
WHERE THE 83 UKRAINIAN REFUGEES WILL GO
“We left on Friday morning and arrived at a centre in Lviv for fragile people – explained Schintu – the operation was agreed with the Ukrainian Red Cross, while in Italy we had the support of the Civil Protection, some third sector associations, including Arci, the Piedmont Region and religious institutes such as Cottolengo, which provided twelve places for long-term patients.
The people were sorted in different regions, in some cases by relatives here in Italy, and in some cases they have already reached their destination: in Catania, Avezzano, Verona.
As mentioned, 21 in Piedmont, in Settimo Torinese, thanks to the Region. And then 8 in Umbria, 8 in Basilicata, 3 in Tuscany in Pistoia, 17 in Puglia, 14 in Abruzzo.
Here in Rome, 29 people have arrived, but they will then be sent partly to Puglia and Potenza”.
Schintu added: “To do all this, we needed resources.
That’s why we launched a fund-raising campaign, one of the few things that works. Without donors, this difficult and complex mission would not have been possible.
We are providing a considerable amount of resources and personnel, and if the conditions are right we will return.
In the meantime, we have set up an initial reception for these people here”.
The situation in Lviv is surreal,” concluded the Cri leader. “In that city, people are still living normally, but the sirens are going off and people are dying, even of hunger.
