Humanitarian Missions at Sea: The Ship Vulcano at the Vault of the Middle East

Relief in International Waters: Advanced Health Care for Palestinian Civilians

International solidarity makes waves and sails aboard the hospital ship Vulcano, which departed Nov. 7 from Civitavecchia (Italy). Its voyage to Cyprus is a humanitarian bridge stretched between Italian shores and the Middle East in turmoil, aiming to provide immediate medical care and relief to Palestinian civilians caught up in the conflict.

Equipped as a full-fledged floating nosocomial, the Vulcano presents itself as a fortress of health in international waters. With outpatient clinics, advanced diagnostic tools and state-of-the-art operating rooms, the ship is ready to deal with any medical emergency. On board, a team of doctors, nurses and volunteers, including two Red Cross nurses, act as guardians of life in extremely precarious situations.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasizes the uniqueness of the operation, “We are the first to do a humanitarian operation in that area and we hope other countries will follow.” This statement underscores Italy’s pioneering role in bringing relief to regions ravaged by bloody conflicts.

The ship’s technical specifications reflect its lifesaving spirit: a flight deck with hangar allows the reception and helicopter transport of wounded people for immediate life-saving interventions. Primary rescue bases laid, patients are transferred to hospitals ashore, where they will continue their course of treatment.

The ship Vulcano, which will rejoin the Italian fleet already present in the area as part of Operation ‘Safe Mediterranean,’ is a symbol of hope and resilience, a tangible testimony to Italy’s commitment to humanitarian crisis management. Beyond the purely medical aspect, the Vulcano serves as a genuine logistical support, capable of providing vital supplies such as diesel, kerosene and water, as well as generating surplus electricity.

The words of Captain Lorenzo Bonicelli resonate with pride: “Italy is already doing its part and will continue to do so every day to help the Palestinian civilian population, which is blameless in the ongoing war.” Minister Crosetto’s announcement about an upcoming Army field hospital is further confirmation of that commitment.

The number and variety of personnel on board, which will expand with the arrival of interagency health experts, reflects the complexity and seriousness of the operation. It is a demonstration of strength and kindness, of technical and human capacity, that places Italy at the center of a positive, purposeful, international narrative of peace.
