Navy, Nave Rizzo delivers hospital equipment from Italy to Ghana

A gift for Ghana: the Italian Navy in the front line to support humanitarian initiatives in the Gulf of Guinea with material donated by the Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Italia Onlus and the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Policlinico di Milano

On 4 May, as part of Operation Gabinia, the ship Luigi Rizzo delivered medical equipment donated by the Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Italia Onlus and the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Policlinico di Milano to the Ghanaian port of Tema.

The humanitarian initiative in favour of Ghana:

A ceremony on the flight deck of the frigate was the setting for this important humanitarian initiative, which was attended by the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Daniela d’Orlandi, and the Ghanaian Minister of Health, the Honourable Kwaku Agyemang-Manu.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the Commander and crew of the Rizzo ship for making this humanitarian initiative possible,” said the Ambassador, addressing the guests present and the crew of the Rizzo ship lined up for the event.

The symbolic humanitarian handover by H.E. d’Orlandi and the Commander of the vessel, Frigate Captain Andrea Cecchini, was sealed by the Ghanaian Minister, who recalled how Italy has promoted numerous humanitarian initiatives in Ghana.

The donation of medical and hospital equipment by the foundations and transported by the MM in fact reinforces a deep bond of friendship and trust between Italy and Ghana

The handover to the local authorities of the materials embarked on board the FREMM (European Multi-Mission Frigate) in the port of La Spezia on 21 February represented a “mission within a mission” for the Rizzo ship, with significant social and humanitarian value.

Nave Rizzo is engaged in the Gulf of Guinea until next June in the national anti-piracy mission “GABINIA”, in support of the security of maritime lines of communication and freedom of navigation in international waters.

The interaction between the Armed Forces, humanitarian organisations, diplomatic organisations and the countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea is a sign of the functionality of the country’s system, as well as a concrete example of dual deployment of the Italian naval instrument.
