The mission launched last May by the Non-Profit Association of Porto Mantovano has finally been completed: the rescue vehicles brought to Ukraine are now operational.

Six ambulances arrived at their destination: three in Lviv, one in Kryvyy Rih and two in Odessa, one of which, the one with the thermocradle, destined for a children’s hospital

A “precious” object is defined by the operators of Porto Emergenza, and not only in an economic sense.

The thermocradle allows, in fact,to remove newborns, born prematurely or with pathologies to a specific hospital that has targeted care, compared to the one in which the child  was born.

The electronic system of the thermocradle allows you to constantly monitor the vital parameters of the newborn, weight, temperature and level of oxygenation.

Inside, if necessary, there is also a secretion aspirator (suction unit) and it is possible  to carry out, if they prove fundamental, all the life-saving maneuvers.

“Today – said Evangelos Tsilis, Intersos base chief, on 6 October – we reached two ambulances from Italy which were delivered to two hospitals in Odessa.

We know that in emergency situations premature babies are always on the rise and certainly the thermocradle will help to transport these babies where necessary.”

The pioneer of the idea was Intersos, the Italian humanitarian organization on the front line to bring emergency aid to people victims of wars, violence and natural disasters

Intersos’ goal was to collect ambulances – also used but functioning and in good condition – to be donated to Ukraine.

To do so, he asked for the collaboration of Porto Emergenza, which proved to be the logistical and organizational fulcrum of the mission.

And the Association has offered its contribution with great pleasure.

It was the last days of April, when Porto Emergenza, immediately getting to work, contacted its trusted mechanic-electrician, the screen printing and the various volunteers who made themselves available to take part in the initiative.

The vehicles were donated by some territorial associations of Anpas and Intersos, together with Porto Emergenza, provided for their maintenance

Within a few days, precisely on May 9, the first ambulance arrived.

During the same morning, three more ambulances were delivered and in the following ten days, the last two were also received.

Each vehicle was immediately arranged, serviced and overhauled by the mechanic.

Subsequently, once washed and sanitized internally by the volunteers of Porto Emergenza, the ambulances were brought to modify the writings so that they were in compliance with the legislation in force in Ukraine.

The managers of Intersos Italia, Luca and Andrea, checked, together with Porto Emergenza, all the specific instrumentation on board and evaluated the general state of each vehicle.

After a careful analysis and after identifying the most suitable ambulance to accommodate a thermocradle, the latter and a suitable stretcher for its placement were purchased

Once the necessary equipment was collected, on September 12 the ambulances were brought with the tow truck on the loading ramp to be placed on the trucks that took them to their destination.

During the journey there were no unforeseen events and the rescue vehicles arrived at their destination (three in Lviv, one in Kryvyy Rih and two in Odessa).

“Organizing this expedition from scratch – explain the volunteer Denise and the manager of Porto Emergenza Paolo – was a job that required different collaborations and logistics management skills.

Togetherwith Luca and Andrea, however, we have obtained an excellent result and I believe that the greatest satisfaction lies precisely in having contributed to bringing these means that will save the lives of soldiers but also   civilians and especially children.”

Now the Porto Emergenza  program plans to reach their station in Palanca, where there is their ambulance and a field hospital, to donate the medical material and drugs collected in recent months.
