Ukraine invasion, Unicef warns: 'Immediate risk for seven and a half million children'
Unicef is “deeply concerned that the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine poses an immediate threat to the lives and well-being of 7.5 million children”
In recent days, heavy weapons fire along the line of contact has already damaged basic water and school infrastructure.
If the fighting does not stop, tens of thousands of families could be forced to be displaced, dramatically increasing humanitarian needs”.
Unicef Director-General Catherine Russel on the dangers of war for Ukraine’s children
“Unicef is working in eastern Ukraine to expand life-saving programmes for children.
These include: transporting safe water to conflict-affected areas; pre-positioning emergency health, hygiene and education aid as close as possible to communities near the conflict line; and working with municipalities to ensure immediate help for children and families in need of support.
Mobile teams supported by Unicef are providing psychosocial care to children traumatised by chronic insecurity.
The last eight years of conflict have caused deep and lasting damage to children on both sides of the contact line”.
Catherine Russel: ‘children in Ukraine desperately need peace now’
Unicef echoes the Secretary-General’s call “for an immediate ceasefire and calls on the parties to comply with their international obligations to protect children from harm and to ensure that humanitarian actors can reach children in need safely and quickly.
Unicef also calls on all parties not to attack essential infrastructure on which children depend – including water, sanitation, health and education facilities”.
