WHO issues global poliomyelitis alert: 'Vaccinate against polio as soon as possible'
Polio alert: the polio virus has recently been detected in New York, Israel, Tajikistan, Ukraine and the UK. ‘We must eradicate it globally’
World Health Organisation raises polio alarm
During a press conference, the director of WHO Europe, Hans Kluge, said that “the recent cases of poliomyelitis worldwide are a wake-up call for everyone”.
“All those who are not vaccinated, or whose children have missed scheduled vaccinations,” he added, “should get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Poliomyelitis vaccines have proven to be very effective and very safe,” he said.
The spread of polio in an interconnected world
“Given our interconnected world,” Kluge finally explained, “the poliomyelitis virus recently detected in New York is genetically linked to viruses detected in Israel, Tajikistan, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
It is our shared responsibility to eradicate poliomyelitis globally’.
