Golden hour: 'One hour, just one hour, can change everything, forever'. Some info for the citizen

What is the golden hour in medicine? In medicine, particularly in emergency surgery, the ‘golden hour’ refers to the period of time – not necessarily one hour: it ranges from a few minutes to several hours – after a traumatic injury or the onset of a pathology

Golden Hour and probability of death

During this period there is the highest probability that prompt medical treatment can avert death: in fact, it is well known that a patient’s chances of survival are all the greater the faster adequate treatment is received, as for example in the case of a myocardial infarction or rupture of the aorta.

In contrast to the above-mentioned Grey’s Anatomy episode, the golden hour generally refers to the concept of the importance of rapid intervention in trauma cases rather than a specific critical period of one hour within which to intervene.

The Golden Hour in Grey’s Anatomy

“What can you actually do in an hour? An errand maybe, standing in traffic, an oil change.

When you think about it, an hour isn’t much.

Sixty minutes, three thousand six hundred seconds.

That’s all.

In medicine, though, an hour is often everything.

We call it the golden hour.

That magical window of time that can determine whether a patient will live or die.

One hour, just one hour, can change everything, forever.

One hour can save your life.

One hour can change your mind.

Sometimes an hour is just a gift we give ourselves.

For some, an hour may have no value.

For others, an hour makes all the difference in the world.

But in the end, it is still just an hour.

One of many.

So many to come.

Sixty minutes.

Three thousand six hundred seconds.

That’s all.

Then it starts all over again.

And who knows what the next hour has in store for us”.
